Event Announcement: Trout Spey with Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions

Join us for a special evening with Tim Flagler of Tightline Productions as he presents Trout Spey, an exciting and effective way to fish New Jersey’s rivers.

📅 Date & Time: Tuesday, September 17 at 7:30 PM
📍 Location: Califon Firehouse

About the Presentation

Trout Spey is nothing new, but it has become one of the most enjoyable and productive ways to swing flies for trout. Using either a single-hand or two-hand spey casting technique, anglers can cover water efficiently while fishing streamers, soft hackles, and wet flies. Unlike traditional casting, Trout Spey doesn’t require back casts — making it easier to fish in tight quarters and along wooded banks. It allows for longer casts, smoother mends, and a more relaxed, rhythmic style of fishing.

Tim’s presentation will be largely video-based, but he’ll also share equipment tips and close with an in-person show-and-tell. This is a great opportunity to learn from one of the best fly-tying and instructional video creators in the country.

Trout Spey in New Jersey

While Trout Spey fishing is often associated with the Pacific Northwest or large Western rivers, it’s a perfect fit for many of New Jersey’s waters. Anglers can swing streamers and soft hackles effectively on rivers such as:

  • The Delaware River – broad runs and deep pools provide excellent water for two-hand spey techniques, especially during trout and smallmouth seasons.
  • The South Branch of the Raritan River – long, classic runs that are perfect for swinging soft hackles and wets.
  • The North Branch of the Raritan River – productive stretches where spey casts help cover water efficiently.
  • The Musconetcong River – varied flows and structure ideal for single-hand and two-hand spey setups.
  • The Pequest River – smaller in size but well-suited to single-hand spey casting.

These rivers provide excellent opportunities to try Trout Spey techniques close to home.
