Fire Mountain Diversion and Canal Improvement Project

Goals

TU is working with the Fire Mountain Canal and Reservoir Company and the Bureau of Reclamation on repairing the diversion structure and low head dam for the canal on the North of the Gunnison River to make the diversion and dam more fish friendly and to make the operations of the canal more efficient in order to improve stream flows on the North Fork, which typically is dewatered during the summer.

Tactics

TU is leveraging interest from agricultural producers and water managers to fund the project through BOR funds. TU is attending canal company meetings and working to find common goals that can help build the relationship and drive the project.

Victories

TU has completed preliminary design and modeling for the diversion modification and raised interest among the BOR about the project.
